Whether it was called giftedness, precocity, neurodivergence or philocognition, everyone was determined to see the phenomenon as a synonym for intelligence, more specifically for \u201csuperior\u201d intelligence. I did not see it that way at all. First, people kept beating around the bush on this. On the one hand, they claimed that no, these people were not more intelligent than others; on the other, they said they thought better and systematically had a higher IQ. Remember that in the acronyms of IQ tests, the letters \u201cI\u201d and \u201cS\u201d stand for \u201cIntelligence Scale\u201d. This hypocrisy always irritated me. Especially since I genuinely could not see what an appetite for thinking had in common with intelligence, which I found much more closely related to the phenomenon of performance.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0756923 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0756923\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It is an orientation, a mental dynamic, a way of inhabiting the world by seeking thought, knowledge or reflection, just as others seek speed or connection. It says something about energy, not about quality or results. You can have powerful philocognition and produce nothing intelligent, either strategically or operationally. Conversely, you can display formidable intelligence without any particular attraction to abstract thinking.<\/p>\n<p>For me, intelligence is not a score, an essence or a substance that can be measured once and for all. It is\u00a0<strong>a state<\/strong>. A state that can fluctuate over a lifetime, from one period to another, from one context to another. This state can sit at three levels: antiphase, competence or performance.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Antiphase<\/strong>, when mental resources are misaligned, disrupted or turned against oneself. Intelligence potentially exists, but it is not expressed in reality; it seizes up, scatters or self-destructs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Competence<\/strong>, when the system is stably aligned, the person functions well, mobilises their abilities and puts them to work for their path, without excessive friction.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Performance<\/strong>, when everything aligns at the highest level: understanding, decision, action. It is the state in which intelligence becomes visible in reality.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Performance is intelligence made visible.<\/strong>\u00a0It is measured in facts, in tangible results, in the fluidity of action. It is not talked about; it is embodied.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And between intelligence and performance, there is\u00a0<strong>excellence<\/strong>. That is where everything is decided.\u00a0<strong>Excellence is the daily path to performance.<\/strong>\u00a0It is not a spectacular state; it is a practice. A discipline. A way of building, day after day, the circuits and automatic responses that will allow performance to emerge naturally when the time comes, without excessive conscious effort.\u00a0<strong>Excellence is the creation of automatic responses; it is training for performance.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-57a580f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"57a580f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Philocognition is an appetite.<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fe1c41d e-con-full e-flex wpr-particle-no wpr-jarallax-no wpr-parallax-no wpr-sticky-section-no wpr-column-slider-no wpr-equal-height-no e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"fe1c41d\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-389c5d9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"389c5d9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>That is exactly what excellence is: the\u00a0<strong>process of installing<\/strong>\u00a0these high-level automatic responses. It takes time, rigour, targeted repetition and clear goals. It consists of transferring into the nervous system what is initially costly and conscious. It turns isolated efforts into effective routines, hesitant gestures into natural responses, and laborious decision-making into quick, accurate choices.<\/p>\n<p>Once excellence is in place, performance can happen. It is not guaranteed, but it becomes possible and stable. Without excellence, performance remains accidental. It depends on a temporary, fragile alignment that is hard to reproduce. With excellence, it becomes the logical consequence of a well-built architecture.<\/p>\n<p>In this framework, philocognition can fuel excellence if it is well directed. Powerful curiosity and a thirst to learn and understand can lead to demanding mental training, informed repetition and a fine structuring of intellectual routines. But if philocognition gets lost in abstraction, scattered focus or fascination with thinking itself, it remains sterile.<\/p>\n<p>Performance is neither a divine reward nor a gift. It is a particular neuropsychological state, observable and measurable, that emerges when intelligence has been transformed into effective automated action. It is not romantic genius; it is concrete architecture.<\/p>\n<p>Intelligence and performance are often confused. Using diffusion MRI and graph analysis, we studied the brain structure of fifty-five adult men, correlating various indicators with their individual income (an economic proxy for performance) and with their IQ. The results were very clear: performance correlates with the\u00a0<strong>modularity of the brain's structural network<\/strong>, not with IQ. In other words, the brains of high performers show a clearer modular organisation, more efficient connections and shorter pathways. They are wired to switch quickly from one network to another and to trigger the right responses at the right time.<\/p>\n<p>This modularity does not measure the amount of conscious reasoning. It reflects an architecture that enables fast, stable and fluid decision-making. Behaviourally, it corresponds to the ability to perform without constantly having to \u201cthink\u201d in the discursive sense. Without excellence, performance is unstable. Without intelligence, excellence is mechanical. Without philocognition, it may lack depth. But confusing these notions prevents us from truly understanding what is at stake.<\/p>\n<p>Performance is not the product of some superior abstract thinking; it is the result of a state of alignment and automation. Excellence is its daily forge.<\/p>\n<p>In my talks, I give the keys from psychology and neuroscience to understand and harness these different dimensions for human greatness.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Qu\u2019on l\u2019appelle surdouance, pr\u00e9cocit\u00e9, neurodivergence ou philocognition, tout le monde voulait \u00e0 tout prix consid\u00e9rer le ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne comme le synonyme d\u2019intelligence, plus sp\u00e9cifiquement m\u00eame d\u2019une intelligence \u00ab sup\u00e9rieure \u00bb. Je ne le sentais absolument pas comme \u00e7a. D\u2019abord, on tournait en permanence autour du pot avec cette histoire. D\u2019un c\u00f4t\u00e9, on affirmait que non, ces personnes n\u2019\u00e9taient pas plus intelligentes que les autres, mais de l\u2019autre, on disait qu\u2019elles pensaient mieux et qu\u2019elles avaient syst\u00e9matiquement un QI sup\u00e9rieur. Je rappelle que, dans les acronymes des tests de QI, les lettres \u00ab I \u00bb et \u00ab S \u00bb correspondent \u00e0 \u00ab Intelligence Scale \u00bb, soit \u00ab \u00c9chelle d\u2019intelligence \u00bb. Cette hypocrisie m\u2019a toujours irrit\u00e9e. D\u2019autant que, r\u00e9ellement, je ne voyais pas ce que l\u2019app\u00e9tence pour la pens\u00e9e pouvait avoir de commun avec l\u2019intelligence, que je trouvais plus assortie au ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne de performance. C\u2019est une orientation, une dynamique mentale, une fa\u00e7on d\u2019habiter le monde en cherchant la pens\u00e9e, la connaissance ou la r\u00e9flexion comme d\u2019autres cherchent la vitesse ou le lien. Elle dit quelque chose de l\u2019\u00e9nergie, pas de la qualit\u00e9 ni du r\u00e9sultat. On peut avoir une philocognition puissante et ne rien produire d\u2019intelligent, ni dans le sens strat\u00e9gique, ni dans le sens op\u00e9ratoire. Inversement, on peut manifester une intelligence redoutable sans \u00e9prouver une attirance particuli\u00e8re pour la pens\u00e9e abstraite. L\u2019intelligence n\u2019est pas, pour moi, un score, une essence ou une substance mesurable une fois pour toutes. C\u2019est\u00a0un \u00e9tat. Un \u00e9tat qui peut fluctuer au cours de la vie, d\u2019une p\u00e9riode \u00e0 l\u2019autre, d\u2019un contexte \u00e0 l\u2019autre. Cet \u00e9tat peut se situer \u00e0 trois niveaux : antiphase, comp\u00e9tence ou performance. Antiphase, quand les ressources mentales sont d\u00e9salign\u00e9es, parasit\u00e9es ou tourn\u00e9es contre soi. L\u2019intelligence existe potentiellement, mais elle ne s\u2019exprime pas dans le r\u00e9el ; elle se grippe, s\u2019\u00e9parpille, ou s\u2019autod\u00e9truit. Comp\u00e9tence, quand le syst\u00e8me est align\u00e9 de mani\u00e8re stable, que la personne fonctionne correctement, mobilise ses capacit\u00e9s et les met au service de sa trajectoire, sans friction excessive. Performance, quand tout s\u2019aligne au plus haut niveau : compr\u00e9hension, d\u00e9cision, action. C\u2019est l\u2019\u00e9tat o\u00f9 l\u2019intelligence devient visible dans le r\u00e9el. La performance, c\u2019est l\u2019intelligence qui se voit.\u00a0Elle se mesure dans les faits, dans les r\u00e9sultats tangibles, dans la fluidit\u00e9 de la mise en action. Elle ne se raconte pas, elle s\u2019incarne. Et entre intelligence et performance, il y a\u00a0l\u2019excellence. C\u2019est l\u00e0 que tout se joue.\u00a0L\u2019excellence, c\u2019est le chemin quotidien vers la performance.\u00a0Ce n\u2019est pas un \u00e9tat spectaculaire, c\u2019est une pratique. Une discipline. Une fa\u00e7on de construire, jour apr\u00e8s jour, les circuits et les automatismes qui permettront, le moment venu, \u00e0 la performance d\u2019\u00e9merger naturellement, sans effort conscient excessif.\u00a0L\u2019excellence, c\u2019est la cr\u00e9ation d\u2019automatismes, c\u2019est l\u2019entra\u00eenement pour la performance. La philocognition est une app\u00e9tence. C\u2019est exactement cela, l\u2019excellence : le\u00a0processus d\u2019installation\u00a0de ces automatismes de haut niveau. Elle demande du temps, de la rigueur, de la r\u00e9p\u00e9tition cibl\u00e9e, de la clart\u00e9 dans les objectifs. Elle consiste \u00e0 faire passer dans le syst\u00e8me nerveux ce qui, au d\u00e9part, est co\u00fbteux et conscient. Elle transforme des efforts isol\u00e9s en routines efficaces, des gestes h\u00e9sitants en r\u00e9ponses naturelles, des prises de d\u00e9cision laborieuses en choix rapides et justes. Quand l\u2019excellence est install\u00e9e, la performance peut advenir. Elle n\u2019est pas garantie, mais elle devient possible et stable. Sans excellence, la performance reste accidentelle. Elle d\u00e9pend d\u2019un alignement temporaire, fragile, difficile \u00e0 reproduire. Avec excellence, elle devient une cons\u00e9quence logique d\u2019une architecture bien construite. La philocognition, dans ce cadre, peut nourrir l\u2019excellence si elle est bien orient\u00e9e. Une curiosit\u00e9 puissante, une soif d\u2019apprendre et de comprendre peuvent conduire \u00e0 des entra\u00eenements mentaux exigeants, \u00e0 des r\u00e9p\u00e9titions \u00e9clair\u00e9es, \u00e0 une structuration fine des routines intellectuelles. Mais si cette philocognition se perd dans l\u2019abstraction, la dispersion ou la fascination pour la pens\u00e9e elle-m\u00eame, elle reste st\u00e9rile. La performance n\u2019est pas une r\u00e9compense divine, ni un don. C\u2019est un \u00e9tat neuropsychologique particulier, observable et mesurable, qui \u00e9merge quand l\u2019intelligence s\u2019est transform\u00e9e en action automatis\u00e9e efficace. Ce n\u2019est pas le g\u00e9nie romantique, c\u2019est l\u2019architecture concr\u00e8te. On confond souvent intelligence et performance. On confond aussi souvent performance et excellence. Dans mes travaux en neurosciences, cette distinction est apparue de mani\u00e8re nette. Nous avons \u00e9tudi\u00e9, par IRM de diffusion et analyse de graphes, la structure c\u00e9r\u00e9brale de cinquante-cinq hommes adultes, en corr\u00e9lant diff\u00e9rents indicateurs \u00e0 leurs revenus individuels (proxy \u00e9conomique de performance), ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 leur QI. Les r\u00e9sultats ont \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s clairs : la performance corr\u00e8le \u00e0 la\u00a0modularit\u00e9 du r\u00e9seau structural c\u00e9r\u00e9bral, pas au QI. Autrement dit, les cerveaux des personnes performantes pr\u00e9sentent une organisation en modules plus nets, des connexions plus efficaces, des trajets plus courts. Ils sont c\u00e2bl\u00e9s pour basculer rapidement d\u2019un r\u00e9seau \u00e0 l\u2019autre, pour enclencher les bonnes r\u00e9ponses au bon moment. Cette modularit\u00e9 ne mesure pas la quantit\u00e9 de raisonnement conscient. Elle traduit une architecture permettant une prise de d\u00e9cision rapide, stable et fluide. Elle correspond, sur le plan comportemental, \u00e0 la capacit\u00e9 de performer sans avoir \u00e0 \u00ab r\u00e9fl\u00e9chir \u00bb en permanence au sens discursif. L\u2019intelligence est toujours l\u00e0, mais elle est pass\u00e9e dans une forme\u00a0int\u00e9gr\u00e9e\u00a0: les automatismes prennent le relais. Mais les trois sont diff\u00e9rents : La philocognition\u00a0est une\u00a0orientation. L\u2019intelligence\u00a0est un\u00a0\u00e9tat. L\u2019excellence\u00a0est une\u00a0pratique quotidienne structurante. La performance\u00a0est l\u2019expression visible\u00a0de l\u2019intelligence dans un syst\u00e8me entra\u00een\u00e9. L\u2019excellence pr\u00e9pare, la performance r\u00e9v\u00e8le. Sans excellence, la performance est instable. Sans intelligence, l\u2019excellence est m\u00e9canique. Sans philocognition, elle peut manquer de profondeur. Mais confondre ces notions emp\u00eache de comprendre r\u00e9ellement ce qui se joue. La performance n\u2019est pas le fruit d\u2019une pens\u00e9e sup\u00e9rieure abstraite, c\u2019est le r\u00e9sultat d\u2019un \u00e9tat d\u2019alignement et d\u2019automatisation. L\u2019excellence en est la forge quotidienne.
