For decades, we have confused\u00a0intelligence<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0cognitive ability<\/strong>. IQ tests placed this confusion at the heart of collective perceptions by mainly measuring reasoning, one of the pillars of philocognition.<\/p>\n

Like many of my peers, I long associated intelligence with this intellectual intensity: the ease of reasoning, the passion for thinking, the insatiable curiosity found in so-called \u201chigh-potential\u201d profiles. But this apparent equation cracked as my research progressed.<\/p>\n

Philocognition is a\u00a0cognitive superpower<\/strong>, not intelligence itself. You can have a Ferrari engine and never hit the road. Intelligence is not something you possess, it is\u00a0a state you reach<\/strong>. A dynamic state between a person and an environment, which allows abilities to manifest fully and have a tangible effect on the world.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This state fluctuates:<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Antiphase<\/strong>\u00a0: we are out of sync, our abilities remain silent.<\/p>\n

Competence<\/strong>\u00a0: we adjust, we respond appropriately to the environment.<\/p>\n

Performance<\/strong>\u00a0: we reach maximum resonance, everything aligns, our uniqueness shines through.<\/p>\n

In my talks, I explain how this redefinition radically changes the way we assess, support and develop intelligence. I show how psychology and neuroscience make it possible to distinguish abilities (philocognition, reasoning, high potential) from true intelligence (a dynamic, embodied and fluctuating state), and why this distinction is essential in education, clinical practice, research and human strategy.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The rise of AI forces us to rethink what we call intelligence.<\/p>\n

In the prevailing discourse, it is compared to us in the field of logical reasoning, which it already masters better than we do. It calculates faster, anticipates better and learns faster. But thinking is not limited to predicting text or optimising answers.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0my definition<\/strong>, an entity is intelligent when it is\u00a0in tune with what its environment expects of it<\/strong>. An AI can therefore be intelligent\u2026 or not. If it adjusts, it is intelligent. If it does not, it is just a poorly calibrated product, however powerful its algorithms.<\/p>\n

Human intelligence rests on something else: it is\u00a0embodied<\/strong>. It relies on the body, emotions (amygdala), feelings (insula) and internal state (vagus nerve). It is formed through action, through perception-action loops and through experienced error, which produces unique learning signals.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Les tests de QI ont install\u00e9 cette confusion au c\u0153ur des repr\u00e9sentations collectives, en mesurant principalement la pens\u00e9e raisonnante, l\u2019une des colonnes de la philocognition. Comme beaucoup de mes pairs, j\u2019ai longtemps associ\u00e9 l\u2019intelligence \u00e0 cette intensit\u00e9 intellectuelle : la facilit\u00e9 \u00e0 raisonner, la rage de penser, la curiosit\u00e9 insatiable que l\u2019on retrouve chez les profils dits \u201c\u00e0 haut potentiel\u201d. Mais cette \u00e9quation apparente s\u2019est fissur\u00e9e au fil de mes recherches. La philocognition est un\u00a0superpouvoir cognitif, pas l\u2019intelligence elle-m\u00eame. On peut avoir un moteur de Ferrari sans jamais prendre la route. L\u2019intelligence n\u2019est pas ce que l\u2019on poss\u00e8de, c\u2019est\u00a0un \u00e9tat que l\u2019on atteint. Un \u00e9tat dynamique entre une personne et un environnement, qui permet aux capacit\u00e9s de se manifester pleinement et de produire un effet tangible sur le monde. Cet \u00e9tat fluctue : Antiphase\u00a0: on est en d\u00e9calage, nos capacit\u00e9s restent muettes. Comp\u00e9tence\u00a0: on s\u2019ajuste, on r\u00e9pond correctement \u00e0 l\u2019environnement. Performance\u00a0: on entre en r\u00e9sonance maximale, tout s\u2019aligne, la singularit\u00e9 s\u2019exprime avec \u00e9clat. Dans mes conf\u00e9rences, j\u2019explique comment cette red\u00e9finition change radicalement notre mani\u00e8re d\u2019\u00e9valuer, d\u2019accompagner et de d\u00e9velopper l\u2019intelligence. Je montre en quoi la psychologie et les neurosciences permettent de distinguer les capacit\u00e9s (philocognition, raisonnement, haut potentiel) de l\u2019intelligence v\u00e9ritable (\u00e9tat dynamique, incarn\u00e9 et fluctuant), et pourquoi cette distinction est essentielle dans l\u2019\u00e9ducation, la clinique, la recherche et la strat\u00e9gie humaine. Dans ces conf\u00e9rences, je montre comment la psychologie et les neurosciences \u00e9clairent la diff\u00e9rence fondamentale entre IA et intelligence humaine. Et surtout, comment l\u2019IA peut devenir un\u00a0sparring\u00a0partner\u00a0intellectuel exceptionnel, capable d\u2019amplifier notre intelligence plut\u00f4t que de l\u2019atrophier, \u00e0 condition de la maintenir \u00e0 la bonne place : celle d\u2019un partenaire, pas d\u2019un substitut. Ces interventions s\u2019adressent aux dirigeants, chercheurs, \u00e9ducateurs, cliniciens et innovateurs qui veulent d\u00e9passer les clich\u00e9s pour penser l\u2019avenir avec lucidit\u00e9, exigence et puissance conceptuelle. Et l\u2019intelligence artificielle, est-elle \u00ab intelligente \u00bb ? L\u2019\u00e9mergence de l\u2019IA nous oblige \u00e0 repenser ce que nous appelons intelligence. Dans le discours ambiant, on la compare \u00e0 nous sur le terrain du raisonnement logique, qu\u2019elle ma\u00eetrise d\u00e9j\u00e0 mieux que nous. Elle calcule plus vite, anticipe mieux, apprend plus vite. Mais penser ne se limite pas \u00e0 pr\u00e9dire du texte ou \u00e0 optimiser des r\u00e9ponses. Selon\u00a0ma d\u00e9finition, une entit\u00e9 est intelligente lorsqu\u2019elle est\u00a0en phase avec ce que son environnement attend d\u2019elle. Une IA peut donc \u00eatre intelligente\u2026 ou pas. Si elle s\u2019ajuste, elle est intelligente. Si elle ne le fait pas, ce n\u2019est qu\u2019un produit mal calibr\u00e9, quelle que soit la puissance de ses algorithmes. L\u2019intelligence humaine repose sur autre chose : elle est\u00a0incarn\u00e9e. Elle s\u2019appuie sur le corps, les \u00e9motions (amygdale), le ressenti (insula), l\u2019\u00e9tat interne (nerf vague). Elle se forme dans l\u2019action, dans les boucles perception-action et dans l\u2019erreur v\u00e9cue, qui produit des signaux d\u2019apprentissage uniques.
